Deska River

The new regulations say the Deska River is closed to keeping king salmon from monday-friday. Most likely, this will make the Little Su crouded with other guides during the week. These guides will struggle to catch fish for a while but it's not hard to catch on to where to fish to be successfull.

Susitna and Little Susitna

Sources say the Little su is still frozen over and looks like the lower river should be melting within a week as long as warm weather keep up. The roat still has snow and looks in rough shape.

The Susitna River is starting to thaw around Deska Landing. Usually boats will start running the river any day if not already out there.

Local lakes in the valley are still frozen. Should be good to go soon.

Fishing Report 2009

It looks like the Deska River will not open to bait to begin the year. Also, they may restrict the river to artificial lures to start the season. These new regulations are due to last years King escapement of 7,500 kings that went through the weir. They are expecting around 20,000 this year. Although I don't guide on the Deska it is important to keep up on regulations and escapement numbers. If fishing sucks here, the Little Su is likely to get more fishing pressure.

The Little Su is expected to have around the same number of fish entering the river this year compared to last. The weir is so far upstream (above the parks HWY) and a good majority of fish don't make it past and I consider the count useless. Who knows how many fish spawn before they get counted? The run was late last year and should be earlier this year. I will start taking trips around the end of May to have a better chance of catching a King.

The Little Su Silver run is expected to be good this year due to the 2005 escapement numbers. The run should start around July 14th. Last year on July 14th we caught 7 silvers and 9 chum. On July 16th was the first day of a silver limit with a group of 5. I will be guiding trips into late Aug. this year.

My fence blew down today and I spent a few hours repairing it along with searching for a new white stove. Busy day.
